We are seeking to appoint a Research Technician to maintain tick colonies and contribute to the efficient day-to-day running of the Brennan Research Group and Containment Level (CL) 2/CL3 insectaries within the MRC-University of Glasgow Centre for Virus Research. The applicant will also carry out data collection and analysis.

 

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • To provide technical support to the Brennan Research Group and the CL2 insectaries. This includes:

          a. Responsibility for generating and maintaining biological reagents, such as tick colonies and virus stocks.

          b. Responsibility for ensuring the efficient day-to-day running of the insectary.

          c. Carrying out various tick breeding and feeding experiments.

          d. Responsibility for maintaining levels of insectaries consumables.

          e. Management of records relating to reagents and samples within the insectaries.

          f. Responsibility for shipping biological materials.

          g. Responsibility for managing aspects of the insectary/laboratory budget.

          h. Responsibility for managing aspects of the shared insectary consumables and tasks as directed by the PI.

          i.  Co-ordinating with other members of the CVR to maintain a safe and functioning working environment.

  • Maintaining tick cell lines

  • Responsibility for the upkeep and maintenance of the relevant insectary area and equipment.

  • Contribute to the safe and efficient functioning of the insectary and laboratory facilities.

  • Ensure good practice and communication between different groups working in the insectaries.

  • Undertake basic scientific research experiments individually or jointly as directed by the PI and Postdoctoral staff in the area of arbovirology and arthropod molecular biology.

  • Contribute to the preparation of reports and presenting of results.

  • Attend and contribute to regular laboratory meetings, putting in place internal arrangements within the research teams involved.

  • Continuing professional development: develop research skills, keep knowledge up to-date through literature searches.

  • Assist in the technical training of undergraduate or postgraduate students.

  • Assist the PIs in preparing insectary-related risk assessments and COSHH forms and ensure compliance.

  • Be aware and comply with Equality and Diversity policies of the University of Glasgow.

The above duties are not exhaustive and the postholder will be required to undertake any other relevant duties as required by the PI/Line Manager, which are commensurate with the grade of the post.
